Door design reproduction - part 2 - 19 Nov 2023

Remember the door?

Probably not, but as described in the other post this ‘door’ pattern is quite a nice simple design, and I wanted to try out a two-layer approach to painting. The idea is to have a layer of varnish in between two layers of different colours.

In addition, the acrylic is mixed with heavy gel gloss medium to give it some translucency. In this case, I chose red and green:

Multilayer varnished painting

It kindof works, but the resulting shapes look quite irregular. In addition, doing red/varnish/green looks basically like green, while green/varnish/red does do something …

Got annoyed, covered it with ink

As it did not look great, I then tried out some ink pencils (!) that I also bought, and coloured in the white parts in black, then over-watered it, then wiped it off…

Multilayer varnished painting, with ink

Luckily of course, the ink wiped off the varnish just fine (it’s colour1/varnish/colour2/varnish, btw) so that worked out! Well no.
