Yes, seven sided. Or seven-lobed, really. Another tile from the Tile Book, this one from the mid/late 19th Century Britain (no specifics given on the manufacturer). I liked not just the shape but also the subtle variation in the texture of the surface.
It also has a nice geometry to it. You can see in the design on paper above that (I think) the original design used curves to create both the outer lobes and the inner ones. Then the ‘peg’ shapes (stylised stamen?) are just in-line with the troughs.
Then to painting! I used matte gel as a medium to make the texture somewhat more tile-like. I mixed some black into the red to darken it, although the general advice is not to use black to darken things. I did it anyway as I am a rebel.
The end result is really nice, actually. Maybe the black could have had another layer. The varnish layer was uneven, but maybe that is a good thing?
