Well, back to classics? Anyway, I bought a book of patterns (meant for colouring, but I find that a bit dull, oddly) called “Arabic Geometrical Pattern & Design” by J. Bourgoin. One of them was this rare example of an eightfold pattern … ok so I haven’t seen many examples of these.
I did not go to the trouble of properly diseccting the pattern to get the construction steps; I suspect they would be quite involved. Instead I used the rough and ready technique that I always used to do of measuring circles and making guidelines based on the underlying triangular structure. This broadly worked, but the geometry did suffer somewhat:
The larger (18) circles turned out ok, but the smaller (9) ones are a bit wonky, and the octagons with 6-polygons around them are quite variable.
I chose quite a colourful pink, yellow, orange, blue, and green palette for the painting. Pink dominates, but the other colours work surprisingly well in combination. The orange uses some of the pink, to align them. I called it ‘Candy Shop’ when posting on Cara.
In a way, the slightly off geometry is less noticable with the diversity of colours. I still wince at parts of it, but overall I like it.
