Failed Zellige on Gesso - 21 Feb 2024

Failed?

So it started out ok. I saw an image on Pinterest (yes, it actually is useful for something - who knew?) which was unusualy a photo of an actual tiling on a wall. Weirdly when I traced it I found that the dimensions were a bit strange. The octagonal center of the image was longer in one direction than the other. I fixed that.

Painting of zellige on gesso

So the center now looked good, but the edges were not great. There was a lot of distortion in some of the shapes, and I really could have done a better job on the geometry.

As a side-note, painting on very smooth gesso is a bit tricky, as it does not absorb the water like paper does. As a result, it pools easily and ends up qute uneven. This was good for the jade one as it gave a marble like look, but not what I wanted here.

Messing with it

So I messed with it a bit. Well, quite a lot. I varnished the painted parts, cut around some shapes with a knife, put black and then white ink on top, and wiped the ink off, then finally varnished the result.

Varnished mess of the zellige

I actually like it a bit, but it could have looked better (if a mess) with maybe more of the pattern showing through? Or perhaps just doing it right in the first place. Ho-hum.
