Tile reproduced in gouache on a tiny canvas - 14 Jan 2024

See earlier!

So I re-did the 19th Century (apparently) tile from this post on a tiny canvas! It’s only 65 mm square and is actual stretched canvas, behold:

I had to gesso the canvas, of course, which I’ve never done before. It worked ok, but then not letting it dry enough (after several days?!) and using gouache on top was interesting. The paint kept mixing in with the underlayer, which meant that I could correct any mistakes (not that I made any, oh no, not me). However, it also lightened the colour, and the gouache did not bind to the surface very well.

Ink and varnish

For the finishing, outlining in black ink (again I could correct mistakes in this, which was nice) and then a layer of varnish made it look better:

I’m impressed with how nice it looked in the end, despite me using my materials totally wrong :)

Final product

This is one I’m reluctant to part with, but frankly that is unlikely anyway - it’s here
