Green and Brown 19th Century Tile Based on Medieval Design - 19 Aug 2023

Which is it - 19th Century or Medieval?

Well I’m pretty sure that this is originally a mediaval design, or based on one. It certainly looks like one. However technically it is out of the Tile Book, and is another Minton & Co. probably by Pugin (the description is vague). Here is the outline in watercolour pencil:

Green-brown tile design

The colours here are my own (big deal! wow so great) but the shape is from the original. Although the original colours are more ‘medieval’ (yellow/terracotta), I thought it might be nicer a bit greener.

Final painting

When painting, I then varied it a bit more, both by flipping the image alternately - basically due to laziness, as when tracing you can flip it over to make it easier. Since the image is chiral, this makes for a subtle effect (for me, anyway).

The darker green looks a little uneven due to granulation of some blue that I put in. Oh, and I almost forgot - I ensured that I made it more even by tracing a triangle of the original pattern so that I traced 8 times. Hmm, wait that contradicts what I said before about flipping. Never mind.
