So I extended the original experiment to A4 size, and tidied up the crossovers:

Ok, settle down. The final product looked pretty good all in all. The crossings are actually not alternating, but still repetitive. It seemed to give a slightly nicer three-dimensional effect to the pattern. Getting the pentagon shapes painted evenly was a little nightmarish, and I probably should have paid more attention to making them even sizes …
But who cares! It’s done and I quite like it. It could be said that making the shapes too even would stop it looking as organic? Is that a bit of a reach? Hohum.
