So I was watching ‘Marco Polo’ and there are a lot of Islamic patterns in Khublai’s palace. One that caught my eye was the very simple pattern on the throne room floor:
The key here is getting the ratio right. For some reason I started with much too small a ratio. The correct one is simply 2:1 (length:width) - seems obvious in retrospect.
Seemed Khan-like somehow. As ever the gold doesn’t show particularly well in my terrible photos:
Decided to over-paint the middle section with gouache (over blue watercolour pencil). Looks nice, I think. Oh, and minor point, but this is very close in design to the red-gold one.
