Celtic Knot Trial - 31 Jul 2022

Preamble

This is technically the first post of my new, self-hosted, blog. The intention is to chronicle what I’m currently doing so it will be a mixture of different topics. Hopefully tags on the posts will provide enough separation of topics, but I’ll see how it goes.

Celtic Knots

So the topic of this post is my first attempts at making watercolour drawings of Celtic Knots based on the book ‘Creating Celtic Knotwork’ by Cari Buziak. (Incidentally, I bought this from Blackwells in Oxford, which turned out to be much cheaper than buying on Amazon!). Here is what they look like:

Example of some knots

These are not the first knot-like images that I have made - but they are the first using the techniques from Cari’s book. This watercolour version should really have used a grid of dots as described by the author. The sketches done in my notebook (as always!) look slightly better :

Knot sketches

These are coloured with watercolour pencils, which … look much like normal coloured pencils, but still. In any case, the technique of adding ‘walls’ that prevent certain crossings is a nice way to shape the knot.

I’ll compare the results of the techniques that I was already using with this technique in later posts.
