What can look quite nice is to ‘weave’ the lines of a design, and paint those. Here is an example of the geometry of the weave:
It’s nice, but the under/over can be a little tiresome to get right.
I painted it in greens (blue-green and yellow-green) and looks like this:
Quite good, although the symmetry of some of the shapes has been lost a little.
